DEGREE SHOW OPENING

Curation, Degree Show, Exhibitions, Inspiration, Openings

In April my computer hard drive failed and between work trips and holidays it took a little while to get it fixed.  And then when it was fixed I was suddenly off again to England with work!  So all in all I am massively behind with everything.

The next couple of posts will be my favourite bits from the DJCAD Degree Show 2013.

Ana’s controversial masturbation video had people queuing to see her show.  Image

Probably the creepiest thing in the show.

What goes up, must come down…

Degree Show

And finally, it’s all over.  In all cases, a show comes down far quicker than it goes up.  Tim Sandys (http://www.timsandys.com/) literally pulled his work from the walls:

Though some of the FA and APCP lot had taken their shows down on the Sunday afternoon (the last day of the show being open), I abandoned mine in favour of the beach for a day or two.  Aptly, one might say, the weather was miserable when I came to remove all my pieces and clear all my things out of printmaking.

Chris seemed to have excellent fun ripping the scrim from the ceiling.  Once thrown in a heap on the floor, it had a similar allure to a pile of freshly raked autumn leaves.  We could have predicted what was to ensue…

Done and dusted.  Now I look forward to showing with the Compass Gallery and the Six Foot Gallery in Glasgow in July, along with a few other people from DJCAD.  I think that makes it extra special; nothing like showing with friends!

I should also mention that I have been awarded the Bernard Cooper Memorial Prize!  I haven’t found out much about the prize, other than this: “BERNARD COOPER MEMORIAL PRIZE – Awarded annually to the final year student who has produced the best portfolio of work in that year.”

I was surprised, but it is a privilege and I am very happy.

So, Degree Show is done.  I’ve spoken to a few people and we all agree that we’re in a weird limbo between relaxing and not knowing what to do with ourselves.  Having worked so intensely for so long, it’s difficult to simply stop.  Anyway – here is what my show looks like! All pieces for sale, drop me a line at helenhardman107@hotmail.com.

Ta-daaaah!  Now off to Newcastle and home for a few days.

Curation, Degree Show

As predicted I was feeling too sick with nerves to take many photos today, but here are a couple of exciting snaps…

Image

We had lunch.  To make a change from The Union shop sandwiches, we got hoummus and an olive pot from Tesco.  Today I tried artichoke heart for the first time ever!

This is Chris space-walking in my space.

And we cleaned the floor, again.  As you can see, the prints are on the walls now.  Glad I changed my paint colour, it goes much better with the prints and really compliments the scrim.

The space has been lovingly re-named the ‘Cave of Calm’, though I felt anything but calm today.

Not quite finished – will try and take some decent photographs in the morning.

Degree Show Install Week: Tuesday

Degree Show, Studio

Install week has come round scarily fast.  I had planned (a little in hindsight) so make a diary of the week so as to show the progress from studio space to exhibition, but nothing much happened yesterday to warrant taking a photo.

Today (Tuesday) the boarders still hadn’t come in to board my space so we decided just to crack on with whatever we could.  Frames were being finished, postcards in progress, prints all finished…we were left with sanding the walls.  Here are the results:

Though I was a little apprehensive at first about the space I was assigned for the show, the light today has turned that round.  Eeeeep!
